FLS modernises digital platform in connection with group separation

To support the separation into two global business units, Kraftvaerk created a new, modern web platform for FLS, combining MACH architecture and Optimizely to ensure speed, scalability, and strong digital brand experiences.

Solution

Kraftvaerk recommended that FLS modernise its digital platform by implementing a headless architecture based on Optimizely and MACH principles.

The new solution was designed as a flexible, microservice‑based platform, where content is delivered via APIs to front‑end solutions across digital channels.

By separating design, functionality, and content production, it became possible to establish two separate digital universes that at the same time share a modern and future‑proof technological foundation.

The new architecture enables FLS to continuously expand the platform with new SaaS solutions and services without being tied to a monolithic platform.

At the same time, the entire solution is hosted in the cloud, reducing the need for internal operations and infrastructure.

FLSmidth as a company

FLS is a global industrial company delivering technology, products, and services to the cement and mining industries worldwide.

The company is known for its technological innovation and works purposefully to make industrial processes more efficient and sustainable.

As part of a major strategic transformation, FLS was split in 2024 into two independent business areas: Cement and Mining. This separation introduced new requirements for the company’s digital presence, as both organisations needed to operate with their own brand identities, digital platforms, and technological foundations.

Challenge

Before the transformation, FLS’s digital setup was based on a large, integrated Sitecore solution, where content, design, and functionality were tightly coupled within a single platform.

This architecture made it difficult to quickly establish new brand universes and digital solutions for the two new organisations.

At the same time, the separation of the group required the establishment of separate digital platforms with their own brand narratives, content structures, and technological foundations—without compromising performance, stability, or time to market.

There was therefore a need for a new digital architecture that could support:

  1. 1
    Rapid establishment of new websites.
  2. 2
    Flexible further development.
  3. 3
    Multi-channel distribution of content.
  4. 4
A more modern and scalable technical platform.

Results

Kraftvaerk delivered the complete web platform and the new websites in just 12 weeks.

The new solution enabled FLS to quickly establish separate digital platforms for the two organisations, while at the same time creating a technological foundation that supports future digital development.

The result is a far more modern and agile digital platform that supports FLS’s global organisation and digital ambitions.

Today, the platform provides FLS with:

  • Flexible development of new digital experiences.

  • Faster time to market for new initiatives.

  • Improved opportunities for multi‑channel distribution.

  • A scalable, cloud‑based architecture.

Flexible MACH architecture

The new platform is built according to MACH principles:

Microservices
The platform consists of independent services that can be developed and updated independently of one another.

API‑first
Content and functionality are delivered via APIs, allowing data to be distributed across different digital channels.

Cloud‑native
The solution is fully cloud‑based and can scale according to demand.

Headless
The front end and back end are decoupled, providing significantly greater flexibility in the development of user experiences. This architecture enables FLS to develop new digital solutions much faster than before.

Agile delivery model

The project was carried out in a close partnership between Kraftvaerk and FLS.

Instead of a traditional fixed‑scope delivery, the project was organised as a partnering agreement, where budget and timeline were fixed, while scope could be adjusted along the way.

This model made it possible to continuously adapt the solution to the changes that arose within the organisation as part of the group separation.

It created a high degree of flexibility and made it possible to coordinate the work with other suppliers involved in the transformation.
